How To Get Rid Of IBS - Symptoms, Causes, and Ayurvedic Medication

Grocare tries to eliminate the subclinical infection and at the same time, increase intestinal health. As the infection level comes down, the swelling of the intestines normalizes and gastrointestinal health improves. When this happens, the patient sees the results by having more control over his / her bowel movements. They also see a reduction in cramps and pain in the stomach area and restoration of good health. Weight loss slowly starts to normalize and normal weight is restored.

We recommend Ayurvedic medication for IBS – Stomium®, Xembran® and Acidim®.

Stomium® (previously stomaid) is an herbal product that helps to fight Protozoal & other infections in the digestive tract. It supports the natural microflora, or healthy bacteria, in the intestine which ensures good digestion. Stomium® strengthens the stomach and intestines and builds immunity to combat sub-clinical infections.

Xembran® is a herbal bacteriostatic and bactericidal. It stops growth as well as kills H pylori in the stomach which is known to be a major cause for IBS. Xembran® works along with the body’s defense mechanism to eliminate the harmful bacteria and does not have any side effects. Acidim® and Xembran® together also help to repair and restore the stomach lining.

Acidim® helps to relieve the gastric symptoms of bloating, flatulence and indigestion. Together, both Acidim® and Stomium® help to treat IBS from the root cause.

What Is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome, commonly referred to as IBS, is a disorder that affects the colon. There are many symptoms that are often involved in this condition, which is how it is usually diagnosed. These can include abdominal pain and changes in your bowel patterns.

Due to the fact that IBS is a group of symptoms, it is called a syndrome instead of a disease.

There are four different types of IBS depending on what is the most common symptom. It is called IBS-D if diarrhea is common, IBS-C if constipation is common, IBS-M if both are common, and IBS-U if neither are very common.

Signs and Symptoms of IBS :

The signs and symptoms of IBS are different from person to person. The severity of the symptoms also changes. Some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Muscle in the stool
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Weight loss

Causes of IBS :

While there is no particular cause of irritable bowel syndrome, it is often believe it is from an infection. This infection, which may or may not show up on test reports, causes the intestines to swell up and inflame. They may remain this way for life. It is also thought that the muscles inside the intestine which contract and relax during digestion are different in people with IBS.

If you have IBS, the contractions may be much stronger and this causes gas, bloating, and diarrhea. If the contractions are weak, food moves slowly through and this leads to hard, dry stools and constipation. By taking antibiotics and other chemicals, we make them MORE IRRITABLE and the problems actually becomes worse.

Common Triggers of IBS :

Triggers of IBS vary from person to person, but there are certain things that are more common and can cause flare ups.

Some common triggers include:

  • Certain foods
  • Stress
  • Hormones
  • Illnesses

A lot of people have issues with certain foods in their diet. Some of these are chocolate, fats, fruits, beans, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, dairy products, carbonated beverages, spicy foods, and even alcohol.

Most people with irritable bowel syndrome find that they have more symptoms and flare ups during stressful periods of their life. Whether it be finals week at school, a busy time at work, or a stressful situation at home, this increase can cause more frequent issues. The stress does not cause the IBS, however, or just makes it worse.

Research has found that women are twice as likely to have IBS. As a result of this, researchers believe that hormones play a big role in this condition. Many women report having worse symptoms around their menstrual periods.

When you are sick with the stomach flu or other types of viruses, this can also increase the signs of your IBS.

Effects of IBS :

Due to episodes of diarrhea and constipation from IBS, you may find that you develop hemorrhoids. Also, if you are avoiding different foods that increase your symptoms, you may be missing out on some important nutrients that you need. While the symptoms of IBS and these physical effects are frustrating, the condition’s biggest impact is on your overall quality of life.

For many people who have IBS, especially IBS with diarrhea, restrooms are always the main concern. If you are asked to travel somewhere, the first thing that probably comes to your mind is if there is a restroom nearby. This can be extremely stressful and anxiety-provoking.

Another thing that causes stress is the endless medical journey to treatment. Patients begin with getting diagnosed at their doctor, then spend many trips to the lab for tests, back to the doctor, until it all starts again. The patient is given lots of antibiotics and probiotics and may feel alright for awhile. However, they only feel good as long as they are taking these pills. As soon as they stop taking the pills, the symptoms start all over again. This in itself causes more stress and can also cause anxiety and depression.

IBS And Psychological Determinants:

There have been many studies conducted trying to associate IBS with psychological disorders. Some of them are listed below:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3281218/

There is evidence that abuse history and stressful life events are involved in the onset of functional gastrointestinal disorders. In order to explain clustering of IBS in families, genetic factors and social learning mechanisms have been proposed. The psychological features, such as anxiety and depression, and health beliefs and coping of patients with IBS are discussed in relation to the symptoms and the outcome.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3309448/

The findings show that patients who received cognitive behavioral therapy along with medical treatment had better mental health. In fact, in more than 40% cases, medical practitioners prescribe medicines such as antidepressants and anti-anxieties to those suffering from IBS. These medicines, however, fail to heal IBS. The reason for this is very simple. Modern science fails to see irritable bowel syndrome as something that can be cured.

But why? Is IBS really a psychological disorder?

This study – http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4223878/ claims –

Emerging data reveals the interaction between IBS and psychiatric disorders including:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Major depressive disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia

This data suggests that the association should not be ignored when developing strategies for screening and treatment.

So what is the correlation between IBS and psychological disorders?
If you suffer from a disease in which you have run to the restroom constantly, you are bound to become stressed and anxious. This does not mean that IBS can be healed by therapy. What cognitive behavioral therapy will do is that it helps to calm the mind and reduce the anxiety. It cannot possibly help reduce the infection in the stomach.
