The text book definition of a hernia is “A bulging of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening”, occurring mostly in the intestinal region. However, this is not the definition of a hernia according to Ayurveda.
Ayurveda describes a hernia as a swelling of the intestine, due to the presence of a sub clinical infection inside it.
This swelling overtime causes the abdominal wall to weaken and eventually the intestine swells up so much that the weak abdominal wall cannot hold the pressure and gives in. This means that the weakest link on the abdominal wall is the point where someone would get a hernia. That is why in Ayurveda, all hernias are classified to be similar in nature – as they are all swelling of the intestine.
The funny thing is.
We have learnt since childhood that the abdominal wall is one of the most flexible walls in the body. So can it really get ruptured?
So what exactly happens?
Imagine a balloon with a long pipe in it. If the pipe swells up, eventually the balloon will deform from the weakest spot on the balloon first. Right? Now the balloon is the abdominal wall and the pipe is the intestine which has swelled up. This means that there is scope of healing the hernia. Yes. But how.
Hernia is a lifestyle disease. This means that if you do not maintain a healthy lifestyle you are prone to developing a hernia. Statistics say 1 in 4 people will develop a hernia in their life.
Did you know over 35% hernia cases relapse within a few years of surgery?
Imagine that you cut open the balloon and push the pipe in and put a layer over the cut balloon to make sure it doesn’t pop again.
Is that the solution?
The fact is, the internal swelling of the hernia will still be there. How will it help cure the problem. This is why in many cases you will find that the hernia relapses overtime. Maybe in the same form, or maybe in another form. You will often find people who developed a umbilical hernia after a inguinal hernia surgery. Simply because the reason being the internal swelling is still there. Unless you fix the problem from within, the hernia will keep coming back eventually. Why is intestinal swelling caused ?
Intestinal swelling occurs due to various reasons. The main reasons are either sedentary lifestyle – eating at irregular timings and irregular sleep cycles and other lifestyle irregularities or a sub clinical infection in the intestine. A sub clinical means an infection which can be bacterial, fungal or protozoal in nature and which modern tests cannot detect because it is not in large disturbing numbers.
This makes the system weak.
This infection mainly develops due to our lifestyle, eating habits, sleeping habits which makes the intestine weak and makes the intestine the perfect place for an infection to sit in. Eventually to fight the infection, as a defence mechanism, the intestine swells up.
